Why is graphite prone to edge chipping during cutting? Choosing the right saw blade and equipment orientation is crucial.

Anyone involved in graphite processing has likely encountered this scenario: even with a brand-new saw and a high-quality blade, the cut graphite still suffers from edge chipping, burrs, or even complete cracking. This isn't a matter of bad luck; it is simply due to the inherent properties of the graphite itself.

The "Soft-Hard Paradox" of Graphite

Graphite has a Mohs hardness of only 1–2—it can even be scratched by a coin—but it possesses a more critical characteristic: brittleness. Its brittleness index is around 0.8, which is higher than that of ceramics (0.7) and approaches that of glass. This means that when subjected to impact or cutting forces, the material fractures directly with virtually no plastic deformation. The vibrations and feed impacts typical of standard sawing machines can easily cause micro-cracks to form along the graphite edges, which then rapidly propagate into edge chipping.

Furthermore, the internal structure of graphite is not solid; it consists of aggregate particles and pores. During sawing, stress tends to concentrate at the boundaries between particles and pores, and the risk of edge chipping increases significantly once the cutting depth exceeds 0.5 mm.

How should I choose a saw blade?

Many manufacturers habitually use standard bi-metal band saw blades to cut graphite, but this is actually not ideal. The tooth tips of bi-metal blades have a hardness of approximately HRC 65, whereas graphite often contains hard inclusions—such as silicon carbide—with hardness levels exceeding HRC 90; consequently, the tooth tips quickly become rounded. This results in blade dulling, rough cut surfaces, and increased edge chipping.

Diamond-grit band saw blades are generally preferred in the industry. Their teeth are electroplated with a layer of diamond abrasive, offering extremely high hardness; the cutting mechanism is grinding rather than shearing, resulting in minimal vibration and reduced impact on the graphite, which significantly lowers the rate of edge chipping. While diamond-grit blades are more expensive than standard ones, their longer service life and lower scrap rate often make them more cost-effective overall. Using them is a recommendation rather than a strict requirement—if your graphite is of high purity, free from hard impurities, and does not demand exceptionally precise cut surfaces, a high-quality bimetal blade will suffice, though you will need to monitor tooth tip wear more frequently.

The equipment itself is also very important.

Beyond the saw blade itself, the precision of the sawing machine's vertical movement and guidance systems directly impacts the quality of graphite cutting. Older hydraulic lifting systems are susceptible to oil temperature fluctuations, leading to variations in precision over the course of the day; in contrast, a lifting mechanism utilizing a servo motor and ball screw offers superior positioning stability, effectively minimizing edge chipping caused by saw frame oscillation. Furthermore, factors such as the machine's structural rigidity, the straightness of the guide rails, and the clearance of the saw band guide blocks all influence the quality of the final cut surface.

A small suggestion

If you are currently experiencing frequent edge chipping when cutting graphite, you can first check two things: whether the saw blade has become dull and whether the feed rate is too high. If both are fine but chipping persists, you might need to consider switching to a sawing machine specifically optimized for graphite.

The above outlines some common industry experiences and practices for your reference.
